《113-1 SA Event》Exploring the Depth: Dive into Geophysical Surveying with Dragon Geosciences

 

On November 20th, students from NSYSU international program participated in an insightful company visit to Dragon Geosciences, organized by Lilian Liu, Brand Coordinator of the Enterprise Management Department. This visit offered students a comprehensive understanding of the company’s operations and cutting-edge technologies through a two-part company visiting: an engaging lecture and an exclusive vessel tour.

The First Part: Lecture on Geophysical Survey and Offshore Operations

The visit began with a 50-minute lecture led by Party Chief -Muhamad Alfani, who provided an overview of Dragon Geosciences’ four core divisions: Dragon & Elephant, Dragon Survey, Dragon Drilling, and Dragon Satcom. These divisions support clients in oil and gas, offshore wind farm planning, and pipeline inspections.

The lecture highlighted the company’s fleet, including advanced vessels such as Solaris, Polaris, and Australis, designed for various geophysical survey operations. Each vessel is equipped with specialized technologies, such as dynamic positioning system and ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle), to ensure high-precision data collection.

Students also learned about the company’s marine and land survey capabilities, featuring tools like multibeam echosounders, side-scan sonar, and seismic survey equipment. Real-world applications of these technologies include offshore wind farm site planning, pipeline route design, and cable laying.

The lecture concluded with insights into the unique challenges of working in a multicultural and offshore environment, from communication and adapting to time zones to the dynamic 24-hour rotational work schedules during high-activity offshore projects.

The Second Part: Vessel Tour and Hands-On Exploration

Following the lecture, students boarded Dragon Geosciences’ flagship vessel, the Australis, for a guided tour. The vessel is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, including advanced drilling capabilities and laboratories for sample testing. The Party Chief of Australis-Dustin Cheng and the crew demonstrated a few videos, such as the dynamic positioning system that ensures the vessel remains stationary during drilling operations, and explained how real-time data is collected and processed.

During the tour, students explored the ship’s laboratory and control rooms. They observed the sampling equipment for soil and water testing, and learned how survey data is analyzed to provide actionable insights for clients. 

Event Impact

This company visit allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of geophysical survey techniques and the practical challenges of offshore operations. The hands-on experience aboard the Australis provided a unique opportunity to witness cutting-edge technologies in action, offering students a glimpse of life at sea during extended offshore operations, which can last up to 20 days.

By organizing such activities, Dragon Geosciences and international program in NSYSU continue to strengthen their collaboration, preparing students for future career opportunities in the dynamic field of geophysical exploration.
