George Shihyu Huang

Do you remember the IBMBA logo? Do you know who designed the IBMBA banner which is hanging on the wall of the IBMBA study room?
The man is George Shihyu Huang, one of IB 101 alumna. After his graduation from NSYSU Department of Mechanical and electromechanical engineering, he worked in an educational institution. When he got a promotion to become a manager, he quitted the job. And he decided to come back to the business school to learn more about management skills. Therefore, IBMBA program was his first choice.

1. Why did you want to apply for the IBMBA program?

My major was Mechanical and electromechanical engineering, but after the practical experience, I thought I must learn some professional knowledge about business management. That’s why I applied in the IBMBA program. This English-taught program helped me to improve my English ability. Moreover, I learnt how to cohabit with classmates having different type of nationalities. This cross-culture environment influenced me deeply.  Another reason which motivated my application in the IBMBA program was the possibility offered to study abroad. I should notice that since I was a kid, I have always dreamt to study abroad. The IBMBA’s overseas exchange programs provided me a chance to fulfil this dream.

2. What did you learn in IBMBA program?

I learn a lot in business management and interpersonal relationship. I think business management includes marketing, communication, organization and research methodology. Interpersonal relationship is related to the tolerance of different culture and cooperation with international talents. I’m very interested in marketing, I spent huge amount of time to study this subject. This is the reason my thesis topic was related to marketing. My suggestion to master students is they should not waste time, they must choose a favorite area, and focus on it. One day, they will become an expert in their area. I also want to mention that research methodology is the most important part for a master student. It would help them develop their critical thinking, and once they master it, it would help them planning their career life and they will be able to apply it on their working tasks.

3. Could you share your exchange experience with us?

I went to the exchange program during the 2012~2013 academic year. I applied Chuo universality in Tokyo. I enrolled in marketing, consumer, and economic course in their business school. This school provided us a lot of courses and activities. I was able to participate in the clubs, and in international students’ activities. I selected a Japanese-taught course for one semester. I then evaluated my Japanese level through a JLPT N1 (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test.  N1 means the highest level). In order to know more about the Japanese working style and environment, I participated in several job recruiting fair during my exchange program.  It permitted me to get a part-time job there! For me, I learnt a lot form the exchange program. I believe that if you are more interactive with local people, you will even get more from the IBMBA’s exchange program.

4. Could you talk about your current job?

I am currently working for Delta Group, a big enterprise having diverse product lines. I am responsible for the total solution of automated production. For example, robotic arm and saving power plan. I used to only think about marketing as how to promote this product for example. But now I have more responsibilities such as the design, the production process and its application. My current tasks are totally different from what I learnt in MBA program. When you face that kind of situation, your first priority is to “learn fast”. My strategy is the following:  having an engineering background, I would start from the application and then try to learn more about the product. Delta Group is a global company, employees could contribute through their talents and skills and also have chance to develop their career life in overseas.

5. Any suggestion for IBMBA students?

IBMBA program is probably not the best choice among those international MBA programs. But you must work hard. MBA degree is not only useful for a job career; it also helps students to build an international connection, and a strong academic learning experience as well. I can give the following suggestions:

1) While you are in Taiwan, focus on your talent or what you are interested in. (For example, marketing and strategy); cooperate with diverse nationality classmates.
2) During the exchange program period, obtain the limited requirement of credits. Then explore the local life and make some local friends.
3) Write your thesis seriously! Then you could build a strong critical thinking, it will make you able to overcome any tough situation in your future life.
4) Be an open minded person.
