Mr. Peter Fan, IBMBA Alumni (Class of 2012)
Peter is currently working for Nielsen as a Senior Analyst at Consumer Insight department. Up till now, he has been working there for two and a half years. Even though he has a dense working schedule with numerous projects, he still manages to maintain his drive to work. He takes pleasure in learning new things at work. Peter graduated from IBMBA a few years ago. What he gained from the program was not just about the theoretical insights into business but also about the practical skills that he adopted. Peter appreciated these practical experience when he was able to apply them in his real life later.
Peter was indefinitely meticulous in giving advice for students who are going to graduate from IBMBA and GHRM MBA.
Firstly, he emphasizes the importance of effective communication. It is critical for us to stay logical and pay attention to the coherence of the message that we want to deliver. Whether you are doing a report or delivering a presentation, it is advisable that you “make sure every point makes sense and fits in the whole context logically”.
Secondly, critical thinking is something that should not be neglected. You need to constantly ask yourself why you would make this decision or why you would decide to go for this “flow” in your presentation. The process of critical thinking will allow you to be well-prepared for upcoming questions or feedback from the audience.
Thirdly, he contends that it is good to work with people who are “smarter than you”. To him, “being smart” is not just about the other people’s knowledge only but also about their experience and how they communicate their ideas to others.
Last but certainly not least, Peter believes it is of importance for us to be exposed to different cultures. We could try to make friends with people from different places around the world, and by doing this, we would be able to improve our communication skills a great deal more. Taiwanese students enrolling in IBMBA or GHRM MBA will have one semester exchange in a different country, and to him, this is a great opportunity to learn new things.
